The Spanish Maestro of the Guitar
Angel Romero the youngest of the original Romero's is in a class by himself. Always listening to a different drummer... not content to just be a world class guitarist, he also studied conducting. I had the pleasure of watching him conduct the Concierto de Aranjuez while his brother Pepe was soloist.
I took a few lessons from Angel and he was a fine teacher and always an inspiration. He has awesome technique and has invented new ones to enable him to express what he needs to musically on the guitar.
His recording of Rodrigo's Elogio de Guitarra, was a milestone for me. . .
I had no idea that the guitar could be that virtuostic! Angel's infallibly accurate techinque and deep sensitivity to the Spanish idiom through the ears of the great composer Rodrigo was astounding.
He has graciously given up his spot as part of the Romero's Quartet to allow the younger generation of Romeros to carry the tradition onwards, as he expands his sights to the movie industy. He made his debut by composing and directing the music score for the Gabriele Retes
film Bienenido_Welcome. He has performed and recorded Bill Conti's score for the film, By the Sword. In addition, he can be seen in the major motion picture, Bound by Honor, a Taylor Hackford film.
