Jorge Morel
Jorge Morel, a composer of music so vibrant and accessible to the guitar that nearly every guitarist who hears his music wants to play it!
He was one of my guitar heros for a long time. I found one of his records in the bin, and bought it. I've never been the same since. His arrangements blew me away.
Eventually we met and became friends. Soon after, Jorge invited me to come to New York and hang out with him. It was an adventure I will never forget.
It was Jorge who opened the door to being able to even try to arrange Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue for the guitar. Now I often include Gershwins's music in many of my concerts.
His musical career started at age of eleven, in his native Buenos Aires, where he studied with Maestro Pablo Escobar. After graduating from the University of Advanced Musical Studies, Jorge Morel initiated his professional career by appearing in concerts in various Latin-American countries.
In 1961 Jorge Morel came to the United States making his debut in Carnegie Hall. Chet Atkins eventually discovered Jorge and paved the way for a recording contract with RCA. And as they say the rest is history |
