The Spanish Maestro of the Guitar
The celebrated Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia, b. Feb. 21, 1893, d. June 2, 1987, was primarily responsible for the current popularity of the classic guitar and its literature.
His sound and expression left an indelible mark on my conception of what was possible in terms of pure musical expression on the guitar. Very few classical guitarists are as instantly recognizable as Segovia, such was the strength of his musical interpretations.
He forged a unique style that always kept sight of his Spanish homeland. This influence was so strong that the classic guitar is often associated with Spanish music, and Segovia. Even so, the guitar under his inspiration, rose to international stature.
In his hands the guitar was coaxed into making the most ravishing sound, and his poetic sense of beauty always found the most expressive way of playing. Many modern players sound dry and lifeless compared to the old master. He used the whole palette of expressive movements possible on the guitar.
